Bowel cancer is the second second most common cancer in men and women in New Zealand. Each year about 2800 people in New Zealand are diagnosed with bowel cancer.
- If you have concerning bowel symptoms, for example bleeding from the back passage (anus) or persistent changes in your bowel habit, or have a family history of bowel cancer further investigation including colonoscopy may be indicated.
- The Ministry of Health established a Bowel Cancer Screening Programme in 2009 and there is now a screening programme in place for people aged 58 to 74 years utilising faecal occult blood testing
